Nicholas Albergo, PE, DEE

Environmental Engineer, GHD Services, Inc.

Nick Albergo is a professional engineer and the founder and CEO of HSA Engineers & Scientists. At its peak, HSA had grown to include more than 325 professionals spread throughout fifteen offices located in the southeast United States. HSA was sold to Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA) in 2013 and then, this year, CRA was merged into GHD Services, Inc., one of the largest engineering firms in the world. Nick wears many hats. He is often called upon as an expert witness in litigation matters involving contaminant impact and cleanup. He is certified by the Supreme Court of Florida as a Circuit Mediator. He is on the engineering faculty at the University of South Florida, and serves as the ASTM Vice Chair on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management and Corrective Action. He is also the co-founder and has served as our keynote speaker for the Florida Remediation Conference for over 20 years now.

Jesko von Windheim, PhD, MBA

Associate Dean, Professor of the Practice, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Duke University, Nicholas School of the Environment

Dr. von Windheim is a technology entrepreneur who is focused primarily on early-stage innovations in the physical sciences. He has played a key role in a number of manufacturing companies based on new materials, processes and functionality. He helped form Unitive Electronics, which was later acquired by Amkor and remains a leader in its field. He was a co-founder of Cronos Integrated Microsystems, a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) company. Cronos was acquired by JDS Uniphase. Dr. von Windheim was also CEO of Nextreme Thermal Solutions. He founded Nextreme in 2004 with technology acquired from RTI International and licensed from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Nextreme was acquired by Laird Technologies in 2012. A current project is Zenalux (www.zenalux.com) which is commercializing technology developed at Duke University that uses white light to measure response to therapy and diagnose disease such as cancer.

Grady L. Shields

Attorney, Wyrick Robbins

Grady has been practicing environmental and administrative law for nearly 30 years, and routinely represents clients on environmental and administrative litigation, transactional and regulatory matters. He has tried numerous matters before the various federal and state courts, as well as North Carolina’s Office of Administrative Hearings, and has briefed and argued cases before nearly every level of appellate court. Grady argued Wilson v. McLeod Oil Company, Inc., one of the main cases under North Carolina’s Oil Pollution and Hazardous Substances Control Act, to the North Carolina Supreme Court. He also assists clients with environmental due diligence and transactions, counsels lenders on environmental issues, and handles federal and state environmental regulatory and permitting matters. Grady is the leader of the firm’s Environmental, Regulatory & Administrative Law practice area. He is a past Chair of the Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and served as Co-Chair of the Section’s CLE Committee for several years. Grady is Managing Editor of the Section’s new North Carolina Environmental Law Desk Manual.

Russell Schindler, PG

Founder, SampleServe.com

Russell Schindler is the founder of SampleServe.com, a company specializing in collecting environmental samples, data automation and environmental reporting. Mr. Schindler also founded Compliance, Inc. an environmental engineering company with offices in Detroit and Traverse City, MI. Russell is a Professional Geologist and a graduate of Western Michigan University and holds 5 patents related to environmental groundwater remediation. Russell is also the founder and host of a monthly technology meetup group in northern Michigan call TCNewTech.org. He is also an avid sailboat racer and has completed 12 Chicago to Mackinaw races, 5 Port Huron to Mackinaw races and one “SuperMac” race.

Nat Wilson, PG

Chief, Ground Water Management Branch, Division of Water Resources

Nat is Chief of the Ground Water Management Branch of the Division of Water Resources at NC Department of Environmental Quality, which is responsible for measuring and managing ground water quantity and quality concerns throughout the state and advising citizens and policy makers.  He holds a BA in Geology from Middlebury College and a MS in Geology from the University of Oregon. He has over 29 years of experience in state environmental programs.

Sean Newman Maroni

CEO, Betabox

Sean is the CEO of Betabox and believes that entrepreneurs do more than imaginable with less than seems possible. He is enthralled by the process of creating new real-world systems with small teams. He is a lifelong maker, and projects that have held his attention include a carbon-neutral solid fueled rocket, immersive virtual reality collaboration tools for engineers, and 3D printing filament produced from recycled automotive plastics. He studied Mechanical Engineering at NC State, and before starting Betabox worked in the energy sector as a Design Engineer.

Santiago Giraldo Anduaga

Environmental and Urban Scientist, Cartographer, and Multi-Disciplinary Designer

Santiago is an environmental and urban scientist, cartographer, and multi-disciplinary designer from Brooklyn, NY. His celebrated theory and data science work has been exhibited, published, and featured internationally at notable institutions including the MoMA in NYC, MAK Museum in Vienna, the Vienna Biennale, IUAV University in Venice, Stalker Labs in Rome and Pompeii, Interartive Spain, and other notable design, theory, and environmental publications. Currently, Santiago works to push the boundaries of open source technology in community engagement at CartoDB.

Kent D. Patton

Global Managing Director, Promium, LLC

As Global Managing Director, Kent is responsible for sales and business relationships in markets outside the United States. With over 25 years of experience in environmental chemistry, Kent has served in many roles, from chemist to Executive level positions. He brings a wealth of knowledge and insights to help laboratories improve their operations. Prior to Promium, Kent was Regional General Manager for Pace Analytical Services, Vice President for Environmental Science Corporation and Vice President and Technical Director for North Creek Analytical.

Josh Robertson

Director of Business Development, Smashing Boxes

Josh Robertson leads sales and business development activities at Smashing Boxes, a product development consultancy that specializes in building next generation Web, Mobile and Connected Device products for it’s customers. Josh is a former Active Duty Naval Officer and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Jason Peck

Jason Peck is an experienced marketer with a love of data-informed strategies and customer-focused initiatives. Jason is currently the Vice President of Marketing at Canvas, which offers a cloud-based software as a service platform that enables organizations of all shapes and sizes to replace inefficient paperwork and manual processes with customizable mobile apps, with no IT or coding required. Canvas is currently used by organizations in over 75 countries, with 91% of subscribers saving they’ve improved their compliance processes with Canvas and 66% reporting that they’ve saved at least 5 hours per week. Peter Schulert

CEO, ESC Lab Sciences

Peter joined ESC in 1987 after the completion of his service with the US Navy. During his 5 years in the Navy, Lt. Schulert qualified as Officer of the Deck in Submarines. This qualification included supervision of nuclear reactor and power plant operations. He assumed operating responsibility from ESC Founder, Dr. Arthur Schulert in 1990. His vision for automation and client service has been a key component of ESC’s march to the top ranks of our industry. He coordinates IT resources to maximize both value-added services to our clients and internal automation. Under his leadership, ESC has developed industry-leading, on-line data management tools for our clients. Peter also leads our corporate social responsibility initiatives, which have resulted in significant reductions in solvent, paper and energy usage. More recently, Peter committed ESC to introducing Reduced Volume technology to our industry. Reduced Volume technology eliminates over 98% of the extraction solvent while providing better recovery and significant savings to our clients in field collection. Jason Massey

Jason has worked with hi-tech startups over the last 15 years as a venture capitalist, founder, angel and advisor. He helped lead over 40 investments with $200 million in funds across a variety of sectors including energy, manufacturing, and telecommunications in Silicon Valley. Jason studied Physics and Finance at NC State and later Mandarin at Stanford and Peking University. His work in China ultimately led him to help launch Al Gore’s The Climate Project in Beijing. He has participated in the industrial tracts of Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room and sits on the board of TransLoc.

Phil Danielse

Phil Danielse is the sales and marketing manager for North America for vanEssen Instruments, a world leader in the design and manufacturing of groundwater and surface water data acquisition technology. For almost 20 years, vanEssen’s groundwater monitoring technology has been used globally by groundwater professionals, academia, and government agencies to manage and protect water resources. Phil acts as an advocate for North American business by attending tradeshows, seminars, and symposiums.

Charles Fator

President & CEO, Hanby Environmental and Hanby PetroAnalysis

Charles D. Fator is the grandson of John D. Hanby, the founder and inventor of the Hanby Environmental TPH Field Test Kits for the immediate detection and analysis of hydrocarbons in water and soil samples. Charles began helping around his grandfather’s laboratories 29 years ago while in high school. He attended Sam Houston State University, where he earned a BA in Finance. After a successful career in finance, he joined his grandfather’s company in 2011. Together with his grandfather, he helped develop a new technology and device built upon the same chemical reaction utilized in Hanby Environmental’s TPH Field Test Kits over the last 29 years.

Zeydy Ortiz, PhD

Founder and Chief Data Scientist, DataCrunch Lab

Zeydy Ortiz is an experienced computer engineer with a passion for helping organizations harness the value of their data to improve operational efficiency. She has a strong analytical background, including statistical analysis, modeling, simulation, and predictive analysis. She is an effective leader and recognized industry contributor in the area of energy efficiency. Ortiz was a senior performance engineer at IBM for 15 years and also worked as a senior performance engineer at Lenovo before founding DataCrunch Lab in February 2015.

Daniel Chen

Electrical Engineering Student, Rutgers University

Daniel Chen won the Morgan Stanley title sponsor challenge in October 2015 along with a “Best Use” Google API prize with three other teammates out of more than 800 participants by developing a speech-to-text/text-to-speech toy companion prototype for hospitalized children. His contributions included working on developing the product design and creating a hardware prototype using microcontrollers and Python for serial communication and debugging. He previously worked as an environmental engineer at Verina Consulting Group. As someone who enjoys working with his hands, Daniel also programs microcontrollers and experiments with the Internet of Things in his spare time.

John Gobins

John Gobins is a hydrogeologist (MSc, Geology) with 25 years of domestic and international environmental consulting experience, specializing in assessment and remediation of petroleum-impacted sites. During the latter part of his consulting career, he developed an interest, and gained experience, in business process analysis and optimization, and development of IT solutions to enable more efficient processes. Jovian Sackett

Senior Geospatial Analyst, Southern Environmental Law Center

Jovian Sackett is a native North Carolinian and a geographer who embraces maps and geospatial technology with open arms. As the senior geospatial analyst for the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), with over ten years of professional experience, he combines the principles of geospatial data analysis, archival research, cartographic design, environmental science, and strategic communications into credible and dynamic geospatial products. The scope of his work serves to cultivate understanding of environmental issues for environmental decision-makers, concerned citizens and media.

Kurt Winters

Director of Technical Sales and Implementation, Collateral Status (cStat)

Kurt is an Environmental Professional with over 27 years of professional experience, specializing in environmental due diligence. For the last four years, he has been assisting other environmental consultants with their environmental database and information requirements for Phase I ESAs.  He is also the Technical Director of cStat, a powerful environmental due diligence application for the iOS platform.

Scott L. Deaton, Ph.D.

Scott is founder and President of Dataforensics, a software company that specializes in helping geo-engineering companies use technology to improve and streamline their data collection, management and reporting. David Riese

Director of U.S Sales, Promium, LLC

As Director of U.S. Sales, David is responsible for working with commercial and public sector prospects and clients to address their environmental data management needs. With a background in biology and chemistry and over 25 years of experience serving the environmental community, David has able to bridge the gap between analytical requirements and software solutions. Prior to Promium, David worked in sales and support for several scientific software and instrument companies. David has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organismal Biology with an Emphasis Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kelly L. Stratton

President, Quire

Kelly Stratton is the President and Founder of Quire, a cloud-based software application used for technical report writing. Prior to starting Quire, Kelly spent seven years in the environmental consulting industry specializing in environmental due diligence, regulatory compliance, and commercial/industrial redevelopment projects. She followed that term with seven years as VP of sales and marketing of an environmental data company, managing sales, new product initiatives, and a national company-wide rebranding effort. As President of Quire, Kelly directs strategic and business development initiatives to advance Quire as an industry leader in collaborative, report writing technology. Kelly has a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering, with a Minor in Speech Communications from Penn State University.

Sonja Stutsman

Sonja Stutsman is an Account Manager for Accelerated Technology Laboratories, Inc.  Sonja has a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and has laboratory knowledge and over 13 years’ experience in account management in laboratory and healthcare fields.  Accelerated Technology Laboratories provides Laboratory Information Management Systems which streamline laboratory efficiency, and ATL has been a leader in the industry for over 20 years.  ATL’s core markets served include water and wastewater laboratories and commercial environmental labs as well. Jazmin Varela

Strategic Conservation Planning Information Manager,  The Conservation Fund

Jazmin joined TCF in 2007 as part of the Strategic Conservation Planning team. In her capacity as Information Manager she oversees the collection and quality assurance of information and data. She manages and provides support for TCF’s enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) for all staff. Jazmin creates and manages Strategic Conservation’s online mapping applications. She designs and executes geospatial modeling for green infrastructure networks, ecosystem services valuation and other conservation planning challenges. She also focuses on projects that bridge the gap between communities and access to advanced tools and conservation planning solutions including Heirs’ property mapping, sustainable forestry and African American land retention. She co-lead an effort at TCF to advance diversity, equity and inclusion.

Previous to TCF, she was an Americorps Member in Western NC. She also worked for NC’s State Park System as a Naturalist. She is a member of Google Earth Trainer Network and a Google Trusted Tester.

Jazmin holds a Master of Environmental Management and a Certificate in Geospatial Analysis from Duke University and a BS in Geography from Appalachian State University, Boone. NC.
